Author: Jim Butcher
Series: Codex Alera
Publication Date: June 28th, 2005
Synopsis: For a thousand years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the furies – elementals of earth, air, fire, water, and metal. But now, Gaius Sextus, First Lord of Alera, grows old and lacks an heir. Ambitious High Lords plot and maneuver to place their Houses in positions of power, and a war of succession looms on the horizon.” “Far from city politics in the Calderon Valley, the boy Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. At fifteen, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Alerans’ most savage enemy – the Marat – return to the Valley, he will discover that his destiny is much greater than he could ever imagine.” Caught in a storm of deadly wind furies, Tavi saves the life of a runaway slave named Amara. But she is actually a spy for Gaius Sextus, sent to the Valley to gather intelligence on traitors to the Crown, who may be in league with the barbaric Marat horde. And when the Valley erupts in chaos – when rebels war with loyalists and furies clash with furies – Amara will find Tavi’s courage and resourcefulness to be a power greater than any fury – one that could turn the tides of war.
Review: I read this for the first time probably 8 years ago and I’ve re-read it many times since but I’ve not yet written a review for it. This is seriously one of my all time favorite high fantasy books. It’s actually what really gotten me into reading high fantasy, before this I mostly read urban fantasy and contemporary, but after reading this I wanted MORE high fantasy. I had read a few, but none of them had blown me away like this one did. Butcher has built an amazing, amazing world, with such an amazing cast of characters that I will always love coming back to this series and I will always be sad when I reach the end.
Brief mention of the characters because there a lot of them and I’d want to talk about way too many of them. Tavi is seriously one of my favorite ones, I know a lot of people who have read the series don’t like him, but seriously he’s amazing. He has no furies yet he overcomes that, and yeah he’s bummed about that, who wouldn’t be when pretty much EVERYONE in your world has at least one fury, most of the time two, and you have none. I’d be pretty bummed and bitter about it. But for the most part he doesn’t let it get him down, he uses his brains to get him out of the situations he finds himself in and I really love him for that. Amara and Isana are, in my opinion, two of the best characters in the books. Honestly, I just love the way Butcher has written his women, heroes and villains, they’re all really well-developed and written.
I could go on and on about all the amazing characters in this book but really you just need to pick it up and discover them for yourself. Because I’m not joking when I say they are amazing. Also, the furies are based on pokemon, how could that NOT interest you?!
