Title: Owned by Fate
Author: Tessa Bailey
Publication Date: September 29th, 2014
Synopsis: Journalist Caroline Preston arrives at Serve, New York City’s hottest BDSM club, with one goal—to hate it. If her brother wasn’t trying to turn the family’s respectable financial magazine into a publication that features “lifestyle” pieces for the wealthy and adventurous, she wouldn’t even be there, trying to write an article about a world she doesn’t understand. But then she sees him.
Jonah Briggs doesn’t leave his post for just anyone. As the owner of the club, his sole purpose is to ensure that his clientele get everything they need, but when he sees Caroline, his only thought is what he wants—to dominate the sexy little reporter and give the most exquisite pleasure she’s ever experienced.
Caroline has no intention of entering that particular lion’s den—not with her family’s reputation at stake—no matter how dark, sexy, and complex the lion in question may be. But with every encounter, she craves more, and with every slide of his lips, she realizes Jonah might just be the man to break down all her defenses…if she’ll let him.
Review: This is the first in a new Brazen series that will revolve around a BDSM club called Serve. Owned by Fate follows the owner of Serve, Jonah Briggs, and not only is he the owner but he partakes in the lifestyle. Our female protagonist is Caroline Preston, she is a journalist in her family’s magazine. The magazine is a financial publication that is having financial difficulties but is looking to be revived with the help of another company but they want to take the magazine in a different direction and Caroline is the deciding vote. To get an idea of what goes on in the club, which she is writing her article on, Caroline visits it with her best friend, where she meets Jonah. And of course, a sexual encounter occurs.
I have to be honest, with this book as a whole, I was disappointed. With as much emphasis as the author, the editor, and publicist put on this being a BDSM novel I expected it to be a little more risky than the Bailey’s previous novels, but this wasn’t really anything different from them. Sure there was a small bit at the end that involved her being tied to a pole, and involved a riding crop. But, still overall fairly tame compared to what I was expecting with the all the ‘This is a BDSM series!!!!!’ that I’ve been hearing. But Caroline’s insistence that she wasn’t into BDSM kept the book in the vanilla side of things and kept me personally from being wowed by the book. I didn’t find it that different from other books by Bailey like I had hoped to find this one.
Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad novel at all, because it’s not. Bailey is an AMAZING author, and she’s written another great book. Jonah is definitely one of her better dirty talkers, even better than the ones in her cop series, and with all of the BDSM stuff that Bailey did do she did it well and handled it properly. If you’re looking for something heavy into BDSM this is not what you’re looking for, if you’re looking for a light BDSM with a hot dirty talking male, then this is right up your alley.
Recommendation: Go for it
I received an ARC of this book from Entangled Publishing. This in no way affected my review.
